PotD - Scenery and Geometry:

I took this picture on a recent weekend away in New Hampshire. I liked the opportunity to mix geometry and symmetry of the porch railing with a natural (and quite scenic) background.

If you know anything about me, one thing you know is that I am very passionate about aviation. I get a certain thrill just being around aircraft and certainly when I am provided the opportunity to photograph them well.

This particular scene comes from an evening of shooting photographs near Boston’s Logan airport. There’s many photos from this location (and even this set) that I think are fantastic, so I wouldn’t be surprised if you see more. With this one in particular, I like it for a few reasons. It isn’t terribly organized, and one of my shots even provides a better picture of that 757 in the foreground, but I like the depth that the second plane provides. The focus is great, and the backlit part of the skyline is excellent. In a few other photos from this series you can make out even more downtown buildings, and even see the light coming through individual windows in a few cases. Unlike many airports, where a shot at this distance would have grass or fences in between, the water provides a nice foreground, in my opinion.

This photo was taken with my old Fuji, which had great zoom and focus, but the pictures managed to be a little grainy from time to time.

I really like the contrast in this photo of the older-style apartment buildings in the foreground with the Commerzbank Tower looming in the background.

The Commerzbank Tower is the tallest building in the EU. Frankfurt, like many European cities, sees an odd mesh of very old buildings meeting very modern ones in the centers of cities. Many cities have taken great strides to rehabilitate those buildings still intact after WWII, and build new, gorgeous buildings around them.

It would seem like a serious clash, but, it works. Beautifully.

Wrong Way:

This is totally not the way to go.

I took this picture somewhere in Montana when we’d pulled over at the end of an exit ramp to switch drivers and shuffle some things in the car. For some reason, I think I really enjoy taking pictures of signs, and I enjoy using the features on my camera to highlight a single color. Red works the best as there’s not a lot of it in the surrounding terrain; greens and yellows will bleed in.

9/365 - 5/29/2009 Power: I liked this shot, and felt it was pretty good while in a moving car. Disappointingly, I couldn’t get THE shot I wanted here. This was in the early hours of the morning around Dexter, Minnesota. I found this spot pretty amazing because there were dozens of turbines in all directions, as far as the eye could see. Giant, too…slowly swirling away and making their magic.

10/365 - 5/30/2009 Up: This was another off-hand, moving-car shot. Probably one of the more touristy ones here, but it came out decent. What’s interesting is the angles and perspective at play here. That building on the right is in front of the Sears Tower—it’s entirely reflected in the tower looking about half way up. Wild!

8/365 - 5/28/2009 Wyoooooming: It was really hard to pick my picture for the 28th. We’d driven through Montana and Wyoming this day, and the scenery was gorgeous, to say the least. I’ll post the rest of the roadtrip pictures up here soon. even the ones taken from the moving car were great. The landscape in this particular spot was very green and lush with rolling hills, but for some reason the B&W provided the effect I wanted…the enormity, the contrast. I was really happy with how this picture came out.

6/365 - 5/26/2009: The 26th was a busy travel day. Originally I was going to fly from Albany to Seattle, via Chicago. This photo of a United Express CRJ was taken in Albany. Unfortunately those plans didn’t work out so great, so I found myself driving to Manchester and flying out of there—much later in the day and arriving in Seattle much later than I intended.

7/365 - 5/27/2009: This picture was one of my favorites taken this day. I was right outside the Boeing factory at Renton, WA, where they produce the 737 series. This guy had flown over and I got a lucky shot. I was amazed how clear it came out (not as great here because I reduce my photos before posting them). I love the contrast between the yellow Cub and the perfect blue sky.

4/365 - 5/24/2009 Mountain Road.: Sunsets have been a pretty common theme lately, but I promise I’ll diversify my portfolio of pictures soon. I think one thing that has spoiled me about living Vermont is the near-perfect sunsets every single night. The sun sinks down behind the Adirondacks in New York, providing an amazing backdrop. Here, there’s rolling farmland inbetween. Elsewhere, the dominating piece of the landscape (other than the mountains, of course) is Lake Champlain. For all the beautiful things I see on a daily basis, I have a deep appreciation for the fact that I haven’t yet become apathetic or take these things for granted.

3/365: 5/22/2009 Sadly still charger-less for my camera on this day. I was able to rectify that last night, thankfully. Once again, we get a decent by slightly grainy photo from my BlackBerry until the camera situation is squared away. I suppose to me at this point keeping up is more important than actually managing an amazing shot.

05212009: Unfortunately my camera battery is dead. Whats’ worse is…I can’t seem to find the charger! Furthermore, I’m leaving for a big trip Tuesday, and with a holiday weekend in between, this doesn’t bode well for me getting a new one. Turns out Canon charges an arm and a leg for them too! There are some cheaper off-brand ones, but I doubt I’d be able to find one in a retail store. Lame. I might have to take my old camera with me on the trip. It’s not bad, but certainly I would’ve preferred the Canon. Enough whining. It makes me happy that I live somewhere where after work I can throw my boat on the car, and head out for a half hour paddle. IT’s an amazing relief and release.

1/365: So, I’m finally sucking it up and attempting a to do a 365. Seriously. I failed at “Blog Every Day April” on my blog but I’m hoping I’ve have better luck with this. If anything, it’ll force me to use the camera and explore a little more. My first picture is a shot I grabbed tonight on a de-stress drive. Sometimes I feel lucky to live where I do because I can have the things I need within reach, but also I can get a breath of fresh air and removed from my surroundings in just a few minutes.
